Donald B. Anderson was born in Ontario Canada in 1936 and throughout his lifetime has been involved with dogs from family mutts to pure bred breeds, including the Great Dane, English Bulldog, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Newfoundland Dog, Bullmastiff, and Giant Schnauzer.
He gained experience in the aspects of canine genetics through studies, breeding applications and exhibiting with his Bullmastiffs and Giant Schnauzers.
Donald developed an excited interest in the Black Russian Terrier in 2002 while engaged in a research project on the history and development of the world of fighting dogs. He became fascinated with the genetic application and blending of specific characteristics selected by Russian Army breeders and canine geneticists in the development of this new breed. He recognized that the parent breed selections and identified traits for a new military working dog required knowledge, planning, perseverance and considerable risk management, from the Russian authorities assigned this monumental task, not to mention the enormous financial requirements. Donald was further captivated by the courage to draw on experience from an earlier requirement, for a military horse, as well as experiments in developing a hound dog. The approach to the challenge, presented at that time in history, speaks highly for the research, planning abilities and tenacity of the Black Russian Terrier originators.
